Conservation by the riverside

Submitted on

It is a sandy, isolated island of land sandwiched between the Loop Trail and east shore of the Columbia south of the Odabashian Bridge. Even if you have never set a sandaled foot on the property, you know it. You have seen it, looked it over and marveled. It is a rare urban dune, a remnant of our shoreline’s geological past that elsewhere is under water or obliterated by development. It is a beach beloved by boaters, and a sandy slope to invite passersby from the Loop Trail.

It should not be in private ownership. With that very few disagree. But, one day it could be. We should not awake one sorry morning and learn we have left it too late, and lost our chance to preserve the land in public ownership for the benefit of future generations. We are grateful the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust is exercising its profound local leadership in conservation and investigating a strategy that could keep the land in public ownership.
