Jimmy Baird Visits Horse Lake

Jimmy Baird Visits Horse Lake

Last October on her 89th birthday I took my mother, Jimmy Baird, to the Horse Lake trail head and she walked up to the viewpoint recently finished by the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust.  She totally enjoyed the visit and the view.  Smilingly, she told me that this was not her first visit of the area.  Jimmy and the original Mountain Dears hiking group of Wenatchee area ladies have been making this hike, from the Horse Lake Road end to the top of Twin Peaks, pretty regularly as one of their early spring hikes since 1970.

The Mountain Dears have been taking advantage of our area’s natural beauty and recreation for decades, doing a Tuesday hike every week--from the Palisades in early spring to Buck Creek Pass just before the season’s snow.  It is with great appreciation that our family has watched CDLT have the foresight and take up the cause to protect and preserve some of these areas for future enjoyment.  Of course for the Mountain Dears who had been hiking since the 70’s, it really wasn’t foresight—it was like “Come on; let’s Get er done’!”

Frank and Jimmy Baird have watched with great interest the protection of lands and the building of trails around our area.  It has been such a quality addition to this incredibly beautiful place.  It takes work to keep our air, our water, and our land clean and beautiful.  That just doesn’t happen on its own.  I am amazed at all the comprehensive and different projects that the CDLT has tackled.  Thank you Chelan-Douglas Land Trust!
