On Thursday, April 21, I drove up to the Castle Rock trailhead at 5:45pm to find the shelter echoing with conversation. The evening hike, organized by the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, was about to begin. More and more vehicles pulled up, and finally 34 happy hikers were ready to take to the trail.
Prior to the walk, and intermittently throughout it, Land Trust volunteer Jane Zanol read quotations from various nature writers. It was only appropriate that she emphasized the writings of Rachel Carson, the author of “Silent Spring.” One day before Earth Day, it gave us incentive to find ways to preserve the land we stood on.
