OCTOBER 2004 CONFERENCE | FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES | LOCAL PLANNING

WHAT A SUCCESS!

The Building A Vision Conference, held in October of 2004, was a highly successful, community-based two-day event!  It brought together over 250 attendees from diverse professional and personal backgrounds in North Central Washington to discuss and explore how this region can continue to grow while preserving its natural, cultural and community resources.  Its underlying premise was that different groups must work together and recognize that economy, community and environment are all highly integrated as we plan for the future.

FOLLOW-UP TO A GREAT EVENT:

SPEAKER SERIES

The Conference spurred intense interest in further dialogue and action in regard to the topics presented.  In response, the Building A Vision founding partners have decided to organize a follow-up speaker series that will bring in presenters who will elaborate upon the major themes presented in the conference, and provide tool kits for how to implement ideas on the ground.  It is the hope of the Building A Vision Partners that this speaker series will encourage further integration of these ideas into the NCW way of life.

Bill Kreager, Architect

The first presenter in the Speaker Series was William Kreager, an architect with the Seattle-based firm, Mithun, who specializes in innovative, affordable and attractive high density design.  Kreager emphasizes the importance of smart development using layouts that maximize available space, while preserving a high quality of life for their inhabitants.  The interiors of his high density homes retain a refined sense of elegance, spaciousness and style, while his design layouts for neighborhoods include unique features like a neighborhood park skillfully and ingeniously created to double as a water retention pond.  Kreager’s talk focused on how we can facilitate glamorous high density design in the Wenatchee area.  Following up on the collaborative theme of the Building A Vision Conference, the presentation brought together a diverse group of community stakeholders – planners, developers, realtors, builders, architects and interested citizens – to learn and plan for the future.

LOCAL PLANNING BULLETIN BOARD

The Building A Vision Conference emphasized that collaborative planning and citizen involvement are key to creating a high quality of life. This a posting board designed to enable better connections between citizens and local planning processes and planning agencies.

Citizen Involvement Opportunity :
Douglas County has joined with the cities of Bridgeport , East Wenatchee, and Rock Island to create an updated Regional Shoreline Master Program (RSMP). This critical update will address future development, protection, restoration and preservation of all shorelines in the above jurisdictions, and will use an advisory committee to formulate recommendations for a draft RSMP. Nominations are currently being solicited for the citizen positions on the advisory committee. The participating jurisdictions will coordinate their selections of citizen members to achieve a diverse mix of interests including agriculture, recreation, power generation, real estate/development, environment, sporting and conservation. To learn more, download the Citizen Advisory Committee information here, or call Mark Kulaas, Glen DeVries or Ann Skinner at Douglas County at (509) 884-7173.
