Foothills Trails Open!

Monday, April 2, 2012

WENATCHEE — The sun chased away the clouds after a week of rain and snow to shine down on the seasonal reopening of the Sage Hills trails on Sunday.

“What a beautiful day,” Dick Giger called out as he stopped for a water break along the trail.

Scoop on the Poop

by Mike Irwin

The scoop on scooping poop is that your pet’s free-range doo-dooing is a no-no on trails near Saddle Rock.

Don’t poo-poo this idea. Saddle Rock is a new Wenatchee city park and that means the rules and regulations governing distribution of, um, meadow muffins by any dog, cat, ferret, gerbil, goldfish — or any other pet — are in full force. In other words, you have to pick up what they put down.

MRST helps out with trail work.

This last Saturday, the Mission Ridge Ski Team helped fix the trail in the Sage Hills.  Click here to check out the article on the Mission Ridge Ski Team website.

Lone Fir Trail Damage

If you are heading up to Horse Lake in the near future, you may find the Lone Fir trail a bit out of shape. The Chelan PUD bladed a 1/4 mile of the trail, while trying to access their transmission line. The blading starts near the picnic table where the transmission lines cross the trail and ends just north of where the Homestead Trail begins. CDLT and the PUD are working on a solution to get the trail back in shape. Stay posted as we figure this out.

Trails at Saddle Rock

Hikers have a lot of choices as they make their way to the top of Saddle Rock.

After passing through the gate at the end of Circle Street and heading up the primary road, walkers soon have the option of taking a steep cutoff trail to shortcut a wide bend. Then, at the bend, there are more options. Stay on the main road or climb up a leg-burning, rutted path carved by years of boot heels and spring runoff.

Hitting the trail

Charlie Naismith, chairman of Chelan-Douglas Land Trust’s Trails Committee, leads a group of volunteers doing trail maintenance Tuesday afternoon in the Jacobson Preserve.

Sage Hills Trails Open Friday, April 1st!

The long awaited opening of the Sage Hills Trails in the Wenatchee Foothills is here.  Each year, these trails close in December to provide mule deer winter habitat without human influence. As hard as it is for us all to wait, the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust wants to remind everyone that even if March starts to feel warm and spring like, April 1st is opening day for all foothills trails north of fifth street except the new Homestead Trail at Horse Lake, which opens May 1st.

Sage Hills Trails Open on Friday

The long awaited opening of the Sage Hills Trails in the Wenatchee Foothills is almost here.  Each year, these trails close in December to provide mule deer winter habitat without human influence. Winter can be a difficult period for pregnant does, as well as fawns, who are building fat reserves to make it through winter. It is tempting for folks to get out on the trail, but the winter closure is the most important time to avoid stressing deer.
