We’re thrilled to share that Chelan-Douglas Land Trust and Conservation Fellow Susan Ballinger have been awarded the 2025 Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest Founders’ Award! Presented by the Wenatchee River Institute and NCW Audubon Society, this honor recognizes an individual and an organization whose long-standing dedication has helped connect people, birds, and nature through this beloved community festival.
Adding to the celebration, our 40th anniversary project—Forty for Forty—is still going strong, with new Wenatchee World articles published each week and free events throughout the year. These stories highlight the special places you have helped protect and remind us why conservation matters. Horse Lake Trailhead Updates |
The Horse Lake trailhead is now open to the public! The newly reopened trailhead features expanded parking, improved drainage, and accessible pathways that connect key amenities—including a restroom, picnic area, and the View Trail.
While there are still a few finishing touches to come—like fencing, signage, and habitat restoration—CDLT is thrilled to reopen the trailhead and invite you to enjoy it. Thank you for your patience as we work to create a more welcoming and enjoyable trail experience for everyone!

Natural History Moment: Bitterbrush Sprouts & Vole Caches! |
This is the perfect time of year to spot tiny clusters of sprouting antelope bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) seedlings along the Jacobson Preserve trails.
These little gardens are the result of montane voles storing bitterbrush seeds in underground caches for winter food. Not all the seeds are eaten—some sprout! Voles often nibble the fresh greens, but the lucky few seedlings that survive grow into the next generation of this important native shrub.

Wenatchee School District first graders recently visited Jacobson Preserve to learn about insects, wildflowers, and the shrub-steppe natural area—and to fall in love with the land. Remembering Dr. Edgar Meyer |
We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Dr. Edgar Meyer, a beloved and dedicated volunteer who was instrumental in the CDLT weed eradication efforts for nearly two decades. Known for his tireless work on the Jacobson Preserve, Horse Lake Reserve, and beyond, Ed brought unmatched energy, care, and commitment to stewarding our natural landscapes. His deep knowledge, humble presence, and persistent drive to make a difference left a lasting impact on our land—and on all of us lucky enough to work alongside him.
The Meyer family welcomes everyone to join them on July 13, 2025 for a Celebration of Life ceremony at the Union Hill Cider -3126 Ridgeway Dr, East Wenatchee.

¡El acceso al sendero de Horse Lake ya está abierto al público! El recién reabierto acceso cuenta con estacionamiento ampliado, drenaje mejorado y caminos accesibles que conectan con las principales comodidades, como un baño, área de picnic y el sendero View.
Aunque aún faltan algunos detalles por terminar, como cercas, señalización y restauración de hábitat, ¡CDLT está emocionado de reabrir el acceso al sendero e invitarte a disfrutarlo! Momento de Historia Natural: ¡Brotes de maleza amarga y escondites de topillos! |
Este es el momento perfecto del año para observar pequeños grupos de plántulas de Antelope Bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) brotando a lo largo de los senderos de Jacobson Preserve.
Estos pequeños jardines son el resultado de que los ratones montanos almacenan semillas de bitterbrush en almacenes subterráneos para su comida invernal. No todas las semillas son comidas—¡algunas brotan! Los ratones suelen morder las hojas frescas, pero las pocas plántulas afortunadas que sobreviven crecen y se convierten en la próxima generación de este importante arbusto nativo. |
