Pedal Driven

This 2010 documentary by local filmmaker Howell at the Moon examines the confrontation between free-riders and U.S. Forest Service rangers over the use of public lands and the bigger issues confronting Americans facing an ever-increasing population and a finite supply of unspoiled wildlands. The 60-minute film is set in a world of hidden trailheads and clandestine pathways near Leavenworth where a sect of outdoor enthusiasts, extreme mountain bikers called free-riders, have gone underground. They are the skate punks of the forest, unwelcome and under pressure to leave. Rangers who patrol the national forest are charged with destroying these illegal trails and jailing trespassers. Pedal Driven examines the shared philosophies of stewardship and sustainability on both sides of this accessibility issue, and offers examples of ways the opposing factions can find common ground. The film series is presented by the Wenatchee Valley Museum, Chelan-Douglas Land Trust and Trust for Public Land. The film is sponsored by Wenatchee Outdoors.
