Upcoming Land Trust Events: (see the conservation calendar for other events of interest)
Wildflower Walk Clara Lake
When: June 20, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Julie Sanderson leads a hike to Clara Lake near Mission Ridge, in partnership with the Native Plant Society. RSVP to CDLT at 509-667-9708.
Butterflies, Bugs, Birds, and Blooms
June 13, 9:15 am noon
Stormy Creek Preserve, Entiat River
Learn about local butterflies, other bugs, birds, and flowering plants at the Stormy Creek Preserve along the Entiat River with Phil Archibald. After eight years of an integrated approach to restoration and weed control, the ecology of the Preserve has shifted from a weed dominated meadow to a much more natural state. As we explore the Preserve, we will pull the occasional knapweed patch as we come across it, so please also bring gloves and a weed digging tool or long screw driver if you like. Wear sturdy shoes, and bring a snack or lunch, water, and sunscreen. We will meet in Wenatchee at 8:30 to carpool, contact Neal Hedges, (509) 667-9708 to RSVP and for meeting location details.
Bats of CDLT's Horse Lake Reserve
June 19 and July 17, 8:00 11:00 p.m.
Search for bats and listen to the echolocation calls of insect-feeding bats with electronic bat detectors. We'll try to catch a few bats to identify what species are using the Reserve. Space is limited, RSVP required. Contact: Neal Hedges, (509) 667-9708.
Volunteer Opportunities
Support the Land Trust with a gift of your time or services! Volunteers can assist CDLT in a variety of ways, from office help to work parties and mailings. If you are interested in the following opportunities for community service, or would like to be added to our volunteer list, please contact Sharon Lunz at 667-9708 or sharon@cdlandtrust.org. Upcoming opportunities include:
- Weed control on CDLT property
When: April June and Sept October
Noxious weed control is one of our most important challenges. Volunteers are needed to help with hand pulling knapweed, mowing roads (tractor drivers needed), selectively applying herbicides, and spreading biological controls. The April 4 workshop is recommended for anyone interested in applying herbicide. Contact: Neal Hedges, 667-9708.
- Water for Wildlife
When: Thursday, June 11, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Horse Lake Reserve
Join the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust and the Wenatchee Sportsmen's Association to repair two spring developments on Horse Lake Ranch. Work involves digging out and cleaning or replacing old pipes and collection boxes. Wear appropriate clothing, bring lunch, sun protection, and water. Please RSVP by June 9 to Neal Hedges, Stewardship Coordinator, at 509-667-9708.
- Reptile survey in the Foothills and Horse Lake Reserve.
When: July 2, 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Find out what reptiles live in our area. Expect western fence lizards, gopher snakes, racers, and rattlesnakes but we could find a few lesser known species. Must be comfortable around snakes. Contact: Neal Hedges, 667-9708.
- Volunteer Trail Monitors needed
The Wenatchee Foothills Trails are seeing increased usage, and we are looking for a few (or a lot) of individuals that can help to keep an eye on things for us. The trails committee has developed a trails monitor form that can be filled out and returned to us. It is a simple form and will only take five minutes to fill out after your hike, bike or ride. Forms are available from Patrick Walker, Chelan-Douglas Land Trust Trails Coordinator.
- Land Trust Brochure Distribution
Ongoing
Help spread the word about the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust! We have had good success with the Land Trust brochures that we have in a few coffee shops, bike shops, hotels, and visitor centers and are planning to expand the program. We are developing a list of additional locations, and are looking for several people to each adopt 3-6 of these locations, and keep our brochures stocked there. It involves making the initial contact asking for permission, and then periodically dropping by to refill the brochure rack, which we provide. You can choose spots that are close to home or that you visit regularly, and just keep a supply of brochures on hand.
- Site Stewards - Volunteers with botany and birding skills needed to periodically survey the Sage Hills and Jacobson properties and submit their observations to the Land Trust.
